Bristol Fungarium & Holland & Barrett 2024

Frequently Asked Questions

Hello, discerning mushroom enthusiast!

You’re here because amid a bamboozling array of options – you made a very smart choice – so kudos to you, and thank you so much for picking us up!

We are delighted to be lining the aisles of Holland & Barrett, and now your kitchen cabinet. It brings us great joy to introduce people to the fantastic world of fungi and their many functional benefits. So much so, that unlike other brands we do absolutely everything ourselves…

We are Bristol Fungarium and over the years we’ve made it our mission to grow, process and provide the best mushroom tinctures on the UK market – with the least negative impact on our local environment, while inspiring and educating people about the history, science and healing opportunities of the mushrooms we grow and love ♡

We strive to do things differently by offering native organic mushrooms; cloned, grown, and tinctured under a single roof. In a world where it can be impossible to tell the true providence and potency of functional mushroom supplements, we wanted to not only make the whole supply chain fully transparent – but to be one of the only companies who know exactly where our original mushroom specimens originate in the wild.

We champion UK native strains not only to get closer once again to the medicine of this land, but to tread as gently on it as we possibly can:

25% of our mushroom strains were originally collected within 20 miles of our HQ, and 10% of those from within a 20 minute walk!

Once lovingly grown on our fungi farm in Somerset, our mushrooms are comprehensively extracted in our purpose-built tincture kitchen by the hands of a tight-knit team of fungi fanatics. The triple extraction method ensures maximum bioavailability of the active compounds, meaning a higher likelihood of really feeling the benefits. We’d love to hear how you get on with them!

In the meantime, below are some of the questions we get asked most to help get you started on your journey. If the answer you’re looking for isn’t there, please get in touch via the contact form and we’ll always do our best to help.

1What does 1:8 tincture actually mean?

Technically a tincture is a product made by extracting from organic material into alcohol. We do a triple extraction, so we extract into both water (1 lower temperature & 1 high temperature under pressure) and alcohol to ensure we get the broadest range of compounds out. The ‘1:8’ is the concentration of our final product after triple extraction, i.e. the ratio of dried mushroom to extracted liquid. Each of our 30ml bottles contains 1g of dried mushroom for every 8ml of tincture – a highly concentrated extract. Essentially, the higher the latter number, the lower the concentration, meaning for instance that 2.5x less actual mushroom has been used in a 1:20 ratio vs a 1:8.

2How much tincture should I take?

Suggested daily dosage of our mushroom extracts is 1-2ml. This can be either taken at once (suggested in the morning around 15 mins before food) or distributed throughout the morning and afternoon as preferred.

3What if I'm taking more than one?

The maximum recommended dosage of any individual mushroom tincture is 2ml daily. So if someone is taking a combination - consisting of Reishi, Chaga & Lions Mane - the maximum suggested daily dose would be 6ml (or 2ml of each tincture).

4Can I over do it?

Yes! Just because our products are 100% organic and natural - that doesn't mean you "can't take too much". Some mushrooms, due to their composition of powerful compounds, can put pressure on the liver and kidneys if taken in too high a dose over long periods of time. If you are new to taking mushroom extracts in the form of strong tinctures like ours - it's best to ease in slowly. Starting with one or two at a moderate dose - and building gradually,

5Are there any contraindications to be aware of?

Yes! We recommend speaking with a qualified medical practitioner if you are on any medication and unsure of how it may interact.

Immunosuppressant drugs are known to contraindicate with fuctional mushrooms in general.

Mushrooms like Reishi can contraindicate with both blood thinning and blood pressure medications.

Please speak to a qualified practitioner if you are unsure.

6Can you take more than one tincture at the same?
Yes, you can definitely take more than one of our mushroom tinctures  together. We encourage people to find a blend that works for them based on their unique constitution and context. Combing mushroom extracts can create what's sometimes referred to as the "entourage effect" in herbalism, whereby efficacy of compounds within different mushrooms can be increased across the board. That being said, we tend to encourage people to start with one or two tinctures and build up from there. What we don't want to do is overload the body with powerful compounds it isn't yet acclimatised to.
7How many grams of mushroom goes into one of your tinctures?

Everything starts with fresh fruiting body - of which, for each bottle around 64 grams of mushroom is used. The second step of the process is to dry our mushrooms in an infrared dehydrator at 34 degrees, leaving us with around 6.4g of dried mushroom in every 30ml bottle.

8How many doses are in each bottle?

There are 30x 1ml servings per 30ml bottle. Taking the recommended dose of 1-2ml daily means a bottle will last between 15-30 days.

9How should I consume it?

Our extracts can be dropped into a glass of water, juice or a warm drink such as tea or coffee as part of your morning ritual. Whatever fits your lifestyle and makes it easy to enjoy, some may even wish to add them into soups, salad dressings or smoothies for additional medicinal benefits at mealtime.

10Problem with your tincture?

Please email [email protected]  if you have any questions about your Tincture.

11Are your tinctures safe to use when pregnant or nursing?

Even though our tinctures go through an organic ethanol decoction, meaning there is alcohol present in the final product (up to 35%), the amount  per dose is extremely negligible. In fact, taking one dropperful of our tincture is equivalent to eating an overripe banana. Please refer to a healthcare professional if you are seeking a second opinion.

12Will putting the tincture in hot water kill the medicinal benefits?

We recommend letting your morning brew cool very slightly before adding any tincture. As long as the liquid you are using as a base is below around 60 degrees, you won’t lose any bioactive compounds. According to the barista-gurus, coffee is best served at 80ºC, so a few minutes should be ample to get you to the desired temperature to add some additional medicinal goodness to your brew.
