      BRAIN – COGNITION – IMMUNITY

In Japan, Hericium erinaceus or ‘yamabushiitake’ was named after the Yamabushi Buddhist Monks – wandering ascetics from the Shugendō spiritual tradition. Sometimes referred to as “nature’s nutrient for your neurons”, Lion’s Mane mushroom is most utilised for its cognitive benefits, supporting concentration, productivity, and mental clarity. It is also a great ally for your immune system and helps to support the growth of healthy gut flora.

      Description

Lions Mane is a Saprophytic mushroom with a long history of use in Tradition Chinese Medicine for gut health, as well as being of great importance to the Yamabushi Buddhist monks of Japan as an immunity booster and meditation tool. The benefits of this widely revered medicinal mushroom have been utilised and continually studied for centuries. More recently, medical herbalists recommend lions mane as an immunity tincture to help people recover from ‘long COVID’ – supplementing lions mane extract may be useful in helping to clear brain fog, a major symptom of post-viral fatigue.

      Lions mane benefits:

      Brain health

Compounds within the fruiting body stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis, which is necessary for the survival of neural cells in the brain, with the supplementation of Lion’s mane showing increasingly beneficial effects in patients with mild dementia. In 2004, Kawagishi, Zhuang, and Shnidman explored the anti-dementia effects of Lions mane, finding patients improved in functioning capacity, understanding, communication & memory, and functional independence by consuming the fruiting body daily for four weeks.

      Cognition

Improved cognitive impairment among a sample study of those taking supplements of H. erinaceus supplements, scoring significantly higher on the cognitive function scale and increasing over time (Mori et al 2009). The compounds within H. erinaceus show multiple effects on the brain’s neural networks, as a more recent study in 2019 posits a significantly improved cognitive function over a 12-week period of taking H. erinaceus (Saitsu et al 2019).

      Immunity

NGF has a dynamic relationship with the immune system playing a wider role in maintaining homeostasis in the body (Levi-Montalcini, 2004). The mushroom is rich in β-glucan polysaccharides that have immuno-modulating properties as well as having strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components.

      Bristol Fungarium promises:

       100% Organic Certified

The UK’s only Organic certified Lion’s Mane Mushroom tincture. All our mushrooms are grown on an organic mushroom farm in the green county of Somerset UK, and are certified by the Soil Association. Our organic medicinal mushroom tinctures are triple extracted with distilled water and organic UK ethanol, on the very same farm the mushrooms are grown on. –

       Native UK Lion’s Mane

Our Lion’s Mane was cloned from a species we found growing just 300m from our farm near Bristol. As much as possible we utilise native strains, not only to help us get closer once again to the medicine of this land – where so much of the knowledge has been lost – but most importantly to have as little effect as possible on local biodiversity and ultimately tread as lightly as possible on the earth. By prioritising native strains we are avoiding the spread of billions of spores that come from commercial mushroom strains that have been selected specifically for their ability to grow fast and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily outcompete a lot of the native strains we have growing around the farm. –

Triple Extracted, 1: 4 Ratio (Super Strength)

We carry out two hot water extractions and a final organic ethanol extraction to give you access to all the bioactive compounds that are responsible for Lion’s Manes cognition-enhancing, immuno-modulating, and nerve factor regrowth capacity. Many capsules and supplements are shipped across the world in powder form as it is a more commercially viable way of transporting extracted products, however, our tinctures are prepared on-site at a 1:4 ratio (1g of mushrooms to every 4ml of water). Tinctures have a longer shelf life than capsules, provide a faster absorption rate, enable flexible dosage, and are easy to prepare by simply taking one squeeze of mushroom tincture twice per day either directly under the tongue or into a short glass of water.

Fully Transparent & Short Supply Chain

Each bottle of our organic lion’s mane tincture contains 128g of lion’s mane fruiting body*. Our Lion’s Mane is grown on our organic mushroom farm, where we also prepare the tinctures and pack the orders – meaning origin can be traced back to one location with absolutely no tampering by third parties. Our Lion’s Mane mushroom can actually be traced back to its original growing location under a mile from our farm! Because our supply chain is so much shorter, and we prepare our tincture in comparatively small batches, you can be sure that the extracts you buy from us haven’t lost bioactive compounds due to sitting around for a long time or being shipped halfway across the world. *fresh value

I started taking Lions Mane after catching the COVID-19 virus before Christmas. I am convinced it helped speed up my recovery as from beginning to end I felt ill for only a couple of days and had a quick and easy recovery with no lasting ailments. Would throughly recommend.

        Tom Godfrey – 10 March 2022

I started taking lions mane four weeks ago, half a pipette in the morning on an empty stomach and half in the evening after dinner. The very first time I took it I noticed a warm almost excited energy in my solar plexus, rising up to my head. Quite remarkable. My energy levels throughout the day have increased without a doubt, I’ve now got friends and family taking it daily after my evangelising to them of its benefits, I don’t see any down side, simply a positive addition to my daily HABITS 🙂

Lions mane has done me wonders, I’ve had chronic nerve pain in my forearms for most of the past year, making it painful & sometimes impossible to use my arms. This tincture has really helped. Deliver was super quick & you can tell the product is high quality

          Head of Research & Development

          Henry Jephson

Following nearly 2 decades in the aquatic industry where he was responsible for coral propagation and life support system design for some of the largest private aquariums in the United Kingdom, Henry made the transition over to lab-based mycology at The Bristol Fungarium due to certain ethical realities he could no longer overlook within the aquatic world.

Henry leads the research & development of our commercial strains, manages our ever-growing specimen library, and oversees our continual process optimisation from agar to fruiting body.

We are very thankful that he has chosen to re-engage with this long-held interest in mycology and Henry is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of scaling up our commercial medicinal mushroom range, with a personal preference for the delightful intricacies of cordyceps.

          Founder

          Tom Baxter

Ever conscious of the unfolding ecological collapse that confronts us, Tom chose to make the fateful move away from city chatter to find meaning through working the land in 2008.

After a few educational years establishing his organic vegetable farm and following 2 decades of largely unsuccessful excursions foraging for mushrooms, from the foothills of the pyrenees to the siberian steppes, Tom experienced a revelation during a mushroom cultivation course he attended in 2018.

In 2019 he downed tools on the farm and invested all he had into creating The Bristol Fungarium, producing the UK’s first organic certified medicinal mushrooms.
