      Description

      Rich in bioactive polysaccharides, Maitake is a prized medicinal mushroom with potent immunomodulatory capacity. Maitake is a known adaptogen, potentially bringing about health benefits for blood and cholesterol with unique proteins that synergistically aid immune response.

      According to Japanese legend, the word Maitake comes from ancient times when Buddhist nuns and woodcutters on a mountain trail were so delighted to stumble upon this seldom found and well-revered mushroom, they began dancing around it in celebration; hence the name Maitake (dancing mushroom) was born. Here in the UK its common name is Hen of the Woods, characterised by layers of caps that are curved like little spoons sprouting from a large tuber-like structure located underground.

      Compounds of interest in Maitake:

      The fruiting body is a potent source of immunostimulant β–glucan polysaccharides, that stimulate the innate immune cells, such as monocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells (DCs)*. In particular, Maitake’s D-fraction and MD-fraction, have been observed to activate and work synergistically with the immune system, through activation of macrophages, T-cells, and natural killer cells.

      The compounds in maitake mushrooms have been shown to increase white blood cell activity and production, helping to detect and destroy bacteria and other harmful organisms.

      Combat stress

      Maitake mushrooms are adaptogenic, helping the body adapt to both environmental and psychological stresses while supporting the nervous and endocrine systems – as well as the adrenals, which are in charge of stress management.

      Antioxidant

      Maitake mushrooms are high in antioxidants, which may help reduce oxidative stress. This is beneficial for the whole body, especially brain and heart health.

      Native UK Maitake

      Our Maitake was cloned from a species we found in Wiltshire, UK. As much as possible we utilise native strains, not only to help us get closer once again to the medicine of this land (so much of the knowledge of which has been lost), but most importantly to have as little effect as possible on local biodiversity and ultimately tread as lightly as possible on the earth. By prioritising native strains we are avoiding the spread of billions of spores that come from commercial mushroom strains that have been selected specifically for their ability to grow fast and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily outcompete a lot of the native strains we have growing around the farm.

      Triple Extracted, 1: 4 Ratio (Super Strength)

      We carry out two hot water extractions and a final organic ethanol extraction to gain access to all the bioactive compounds responsible for Maitake’s immuno-modulating, adaptogenic and antioxidant capacity. Many capsules and supplements are shipped across the world in powder form as it is a more commercially viable way of transporting extracted products, however, our tinctures are prepared on-site at a 1:4 ratio (1g of mushrooms to every 4ml of water). Tinctures have a longer shelf life than capsules, provide a faster absorption rate, enable flexible dosage, and are easy to prepare by simply taking one squeeze of mushroom tincture twice per day either directly under the tongue or into a short glass of water.

Our Maitake is grown on our organic mushroom farm, where we also prepare the tinctures and pack the orders – meaning origin can be traced back to one location with absolutely no tampering by third parties.         I have recently become fascinated with the medicinal properties of mushrooms and was recommended the Bristol fungarium by a colleague at work. I bought the maitake and the lions mane and I have been really pleased with both. You can really tell that the products are quality and that a lot of care and effort went into the process of making them. I have only been taking the tinctures for a short while and perhaps it is partly psychosomatic, but I have been feeling good and I feel like there is definitely something at play from taking the extracts! Would highly recommend if you have an interest in such things or have a willingness to give something new a go.

        I have been severely burnt out the past year due to due years of chronic stress, I truly believe the maitake has really helped lower my stress levels. Since taking for about 6 weeks, I’ve had less frequent & less intense heart racing & much less stomach pains. High quality product & really fast delivery

          Henry Jephson


          Following nearly 2 decades in the aquatic industry where he was responsible for coral propagation and life support system design for some of the largest private aquariums in the United Kingdom, Henry made the transition over to lab-based mycology at The Bristol Fungarium due to certain ethical realities he could no longer overlook within the aquatic world.

          Henry leads the research & development of our commercial strains, manages our ever-growing specimen library, and oversees our continual process optimisation from agar to fruiting body.

          We are very thankful that he has chosen to re-engage with this long-held interest in mycology and Henry is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of scaling up our commercial medicinal mushroom range, with a personal preference for the delightful intricacies of cordyceps.

          Ever conscious of the unfolding ecological collapse that confronts us, Tom chose to make the fateful move away from city chatter to find meaning through working the land in 2008.

          After a few educational years establishing his organic vegetable farm and following 2 decades of largely unsuccessful excursions foraging for mushrooms, from the foothills of the pyrenees to the siberian steppes, Tom experienced a revelation during a mushroom cultivation course he attended in 2018.

          In 2019 he downed tools on the farm and invested all he had into creating The Bristol Fungarium, producing the UK’s first organic certified medicinal mushrooms.
